Cloisters Series

Images |Images Project Description | Project Description
Originally an Augustinian nunnery, the cloisters are quite possibly the most peaceful part of Lacock Abbey. Ela of Salisbury founded this Abbey in 1232, and the patterns, shapes and textures of the cloisters are fascinating to a girl from Aotearoa / New Zealand, where our history is in the land, not bricks, mortar and stone.

These images are intended to be representative of the cloisters, with the botanical specimens featured within each serving as a reminder of the work by William Henry Fox Talbot, and his invention of the photographic image. I intend the Cloister Series images to lead on to a greater body of work (yet to be produced) which will reflect on solitude and safety with a reference to women, especially of Ela’s time – and what may or may not have changed since.
