Annemarie Hope-Cross

Art would appear to be in my genes. A Father who was a German trained photographic chemist, a Grandfather who worked as a professional photographer, and Great Grandfathers who made glass negatives have all left their mark.

It wasn’t until 2011 however that my own photographic practice was struck by a “light bulb” moment. Spending time at the Fox Talbot Museum in the UK, I learnt to craft paper negatives and make photogenic drawings. Those words alone invoke a sense of wonder.

Now, I spend my days enjoying the contemplative nature of making images outdoors in the sunshine, enjoying the inevitable imperfections of a hand made image and the vagaries of light and weather.

I work intuitively; aware, but not restrained by those who have gone before. I make images to comment, to appreciate our world and to satisfy my heart and mind. I share my work hoping that the images I make will speak to others.

My work is in the collection of the Fox Talbot Museum in the UK, Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of Aotearoa NZ, and various private collections.
