Penseroso

I was blessed to grow up in a musical family and learnt to play several woodwind instruments – especially the clarinet, which remains a favourite.

My mother and I visited Europe in 2006, on a tour to the homes and workplaces of many composers. This trip has led to ‘classical’ music becoming increasingly important to me.

Penseroso is a musical term meaning ‘pensively, thoughtfully, meditatively’. This series came about as I listened to ‘Largo’ the second movement from Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. On contemplating this masterpiece, I wondered how I would reinterpret ‘Largo’ in my own medium of cameraless photography. This series is the very personal result, reflecting some of my favourite works and what they mean to me.

In each image, it was important to me that the music score itself could be read, so anyone able to read music would be transported and hear that music in their head.

Images are cameraless cyanotypes, each 420 x 297mm.
